Air Pollutants: Implications, Monitoring, and Modeling
Air pollution is one of the most important scourges in the present era and responsible for eight million deaths every year worldwide. Short and long-term exposure to harmful air pollutants contribute to a wide variety of adverse health effects. Particulate matter (PM) penetrate the respiratory tracts causing respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Elevated level of ground level ozone also affects the respiratory and cardiovascular system. Nitrogen oxide, Carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide all are harmful to humans. Carbon monoxide can even provoke direct poisoning when breathed in at high levels. The present course will provide an overview on types of air pollutants, their health implications, sources and sinks of these air pollutants, their chemical transformation, their monitoring using in-situ observations and remote sensing, and various processes affecting their spatio-temporal variation using chemistry transport modeling. The course is therefore of special interest for the professionals, researchers and students interested in learning more about air pollution, their implications, monitoring and modeling.
