Role Overview

The intern will work with a specialised sub-team of the Product Engineering support division, which will focus specifically on the z Hardware or the z/OS support function. The primary responsibilities will be providing input to the service structure improvement, infrastructure optimisation, as well as enhancements to the serviceability of mainframe sets. With experienced engineers and interns, the interns design tests, implement, and design efficiency aids to improve operational efficiency within the engineering environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in developing, designing, and testing the effectiveness of productivity instruments as well as infrastructure components.
• Help with programming tasks that require programming in C, C++, Java, or Assembly to enhance back-end services.
• Examine system-wide performance metrics and contribute to structure maintenance.
• Do backend testing, identify issues and resolve under the direction of senior engineers.
• Participate in the writing and maintenance of automated or scripting tools by making use of Python, JavaScript, Perl or Bash.
• Contribute to the testing of software and assist in identifying potential to improve automation.
• Work with team members to document the technical procedures, troubleshooting reports, as well as performance assessments.
• Apply engineering principles to help support the development of mainframe products and support capabilities.

Required Education

• Bachelor’s Degree with a major in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or any related technical discipline.

Preferred Education

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering with a specialisation in designing systems or programming.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

• A strong desire to pursue the field of software engineering or computer engineering.
• Basic understanding of software design and testing techniques.
• A solid understanding of computers and systems-level design.
• At least one programming language like C, C++, Java, or Assembly.
• Excellent analytical and debugging skills to identify system-level problems.
• Experience with scripting languages such as Python, JavaScript, Perl or Bash.
• Effective written and oral communication abilities to facilitate teamwork.
