Atul Subhash was discovered deceased in his home in the Manjunath Layout area of Bengaluru. Authorities noted the presence of a placard stating “Justice is due” in the room where he turned his life. His death has ignited critical discussions regarding mental health, marital issues, and the integrity of the justice system.

A complaint lodged by his brother, Bikas Kumar, with the Marathahalli police, outlined years of alleged mistreatment from his wife and her family. The First Information Report (FIR) identifies four individuals: his wife Nikita, mother-in-law Nisha Singhania, brother-in-law Anurag Singhania, and uncle-in-law Sushil Singhania. The FIR includes accusations of abetment of suicide under Section 108 of the Indian Penal Code along with Section 3(5) concerning joint criminal liability.

In his death note and video, Atul recounted years of emotional torment linked to his marriage with Nikita, which took place in 2019. Although they welcomed a child in 2020, their relationship reportedly fell apart soon after. Atul claimed that Nikita and her family persistently pressed him for large sums of money, including ₹3 crore, to resolve allegedly false cases against him.

He also alleged that Nikita requested ₹30 lakh just for him to have visitation rights to their four-year-old son. In his note, Atul voiced profound anguish over his estrangement from his child and the financial strain from court-ordered maintenance payments.

Among the most serious claims is that a judge demanded ₹5 lakh to resolve ongoing legal disputes. If substantiated, these allegations could highlight significant concerns regarding corruption within the judiciary.

Video Message
Before ending his life, Atul recorded an 80-minute video on Rumble, a social media platform, in which he outlined the motivations behind his choice. He stated:
“The money I earn is making my enemies stronger. The same money will be used to destroy me… With the money from my taxes, this court and police system will harass me, my family, and other good people. So, the supply of value should be finished.”

Atul expressed a desire for his wife and her family to be kept away from his remains, insisting that his ashes not be scattered until justice was served. In a poignant gesture, he suggested that if his alleged harassers went unpunished, his ashes should be thrown into the gutter outside the court.

Legal and Investigative Progress
The Marathahalli police have confirmed that a case has been initiated following the family’s complaint. A senior officer remarked:
“All the allegations are being looked into, and we are investigating the matter thoroughly. As of now, no arrests have been made.”

Initial investigations indicated that Atul was involved in multiple legal disputes initiated by his wife in Uttar Pradesh. He had also sent a death note via email to several individuals, including members of an NGO with which he was affiliated.

Public Reactions
The tragic event has sparked outrage on social media, with many calling for justice for Atul. Hashtags such as #JusticeForAtul and #MensRights have gained traction as users demand a comprehensive investigation and systemic reforms to address the challenges men face in marital issues.

In his death note, Atul lamented the absence of a National Commission for Men and highlighted the lack of gender-neutral laws concerning rape and false accusations. Many have echoed these views, emphasizing the necessity for equitable legal frameworks.

Family’s Plea
Atul’s family is heartbroken over their loss and has committed to seeking justice. His brother, Bikas Kumar, has claimed that Atul faced both mental and physical harassment and is urging authorities to take prompt action against the individuals named in the FIR.

They are also seeking custody of Atul’s child, emphasizing in his death note:
“My parents can provide better values and upbringing for my child than the environment he would grow up in otherwise.”

Larger Implications
This incident has reignited discussions about the difficulties men encounter in marital disputes, particularly concerning allegations of harassment and financial pressures. Critics highlight that while laws are intended to protect women from abuse, they can be misused, resulting in severe consequences.

Activists and legal professionals are advocating for a more balanced approach that protects all parties involved in disputes. Proponents of men’s rights are calling for the creation of a National Commission for Men, stricter penalties for false allegations, and gender-neutral reforms in family law.

A Call for Reform
Atul’s death serves as a stark reminder of the profound impact that unresolved legal disputes and marital strife can have on individuals. It underscores the pressing need for reforms in both legal systems and societal attitudes to avert similar tragedies in the future.

As investigations proceed, the nation is watching intently, hoping for justice and meaningful change to emerge from this incident. For Atul’s family, the journey toward justice is just beginning.
